Perimenopause, Hormonal Shifts & Laser Hair Removal: Why “Permanent” Has an Asterisk

Our bodies are constantly changing. From puberty to pregnancy, from perimenopause to post-menopause (and all the hormonal shifts in between), our hair growth patterns are influenced by these natural cycles. Even if you’ve had laser hair removal, you may notice new or returning hair growth as these hormonal changes take place. But here’s the good news: laser-treated follicles never return to their original state, so any hair that grows back will be lighter, thinner, and softer.

It's only a matter of time before we all experience hormonal shifts, no matter our gender. We just tend to associate it with menopause, making it seem gendered.
It's only a matter of time before we all experience hormonal shifts, no matter our gender. We just tend to associate it with menopause, making it seem gendered.

What Happens During Perimenopause?

Perimenopause marks the years leading up to menopause, when estrogen and progesterone begin to decline, and androgen levels (like testosterone) can have a more noticeable influence on the body. For many people, this means an increase in facial hair—especially on the chin, jawline, or upper lip—a condition known as hirsutism.

Laser Hair Removal vs. Hormonal Shifts

Laser hair removal works by damaging the hair follicle to prevent future growth, but it can’t stop new follicles from becoming active due to hormonal changes. That’s why we describe laser as “permanent hair reduction” rather than total removal. Once treated, most follicles are gone for good—but when your hormones shift, new or dormant follicles may begin producing hair.

Think of it like this: laser hair removal turns a dense forest into a sparse meadow. If your hormones decide to plant a few new trees, they’ll still grow much slower and softer than the original forest ever did.

Does This Affect Everyone?

Yes! While we often associate hormonal shifts with menstruation or menopause, the reality is that hormone levels fluctuate for all genders throughout life. Whether due to age, medication, stress, or medical conditions like PCOS, hormone-driven hair growth can affect anyone.

Why Laser is Still Worth It

Even with the potential for hormone-triggered regrowth, laser hair removal delivers lasting benefits:

  • Treated follicles are permanently disabled.

  • Any future regrowth will be lighter and finer.

  • Maintenance sessions are minimal and far less frequent than waxing or shaving.

This is why we say laser is permanent with an asterisk: the results stand the test of time, but nature can sometimes have the final say.
