PCOS and Me: The Fight for My Health and the Right to Be Heard

Living with PCOS means more than just irregular cycles—it’s a battle against hormonal imbalances, unwanted hair growth, and a medical system that too often dismisses women’s pain. Here’s my journey with PCOS, early menopause, and why self-advocacy in healthcare is the fight of our lives.

PCOS left my hormones completely out of balance

When Your Body Feels Like the Enemy

I was in my early twenties when I first realized something wasn’t right. My periods were wildly irregular—sometimes months apart, sometimes showing up back-to-back. My skin broke out like I was stuck in a second puberty. And the hair? It was everywhere. Thick, coarse, and growing in places I didn’t want it to.

I was exhausted all the time. My weight fluctuated no matter what I ate. And no matter how many doctors I saw, the answer was always the same:

"Just lose some weight. That should fix it."

Spoiler alert: It didn’t.

Getting a Diagnosis Shouldn’t Be This Hard

It took years for a doctor to finally take me seriously. And even when I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), the “treatment” I was given was barely that. Birth control to regulate my cycles. Metformin to manage insulin resistance. And that was it.

No discussion about what was really happening in my body. No warning about the risks of early menopause. No roadmap for managing the symptoms beyond "try losing weight and taking this pill."

I was left to figure it out on my own.

When PCOS Leads to Early Menopause

Fast forward to my thirties. My symptoms weren’t just frustrating anymore—they were debilitating. Cramping, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings that made me feel like I was losing my mind.

And then came the final blow: A hysterectomy.

Due to complications, my uterus had to go. And with it, the last shreds of hormonal stability I had. My body was forced into early menopause overnight.

At an age when most women weren’t even thinking about menopause yet, I was dealing with its full force—hot flashes, bone pain, hair thinning, insomnia, weight gain, depression. And, ironically, even more facial hair.

Because PCOS doesn’t just “go away” when your uterus does. The hormonal imbalances stay. The fight continues.

Why Medical Advocacy is Exhausting (But Necessary)

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that women’s pain is often ignored. Especially when it comes to reproductive health.

I can’t count the number of times I was brushed off, told my symptoms were normal, or that I just needed to “try harder” to manage my weight, my skin, my hair.

If I hadn’t kept pushing—if I hadn’t insisted on getting tests, on demanding explanations—I might still be suffering in silence today.

And that’s the worst part: How many women are suffering in silence because they’ve been conditioned to believe their pain isn’t real?

How Laser Hair Removal Gave Me Back Control

I can’t fix the entire medical system. I can’t erase the years of frustration, misdiagnosis, and being told to "just deal with it."

But what I could do was take control over one thing that PCOS had taken from me: My confidence.

Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) was one of the worst parts of my PCOS. Shaving every day. Plucking until my skin was raw. Feeling like my body was betraying me at every turn.

So, I turned to laser hair removal.

Not only did it work, but it changed my life. No more five o’clock shadow. No more endless shaving. No more feeling like I had to apologize for existing in a body that didn’t fit society’s standards.

That’s why I do what I do now. Because I know what it’s like to feel powerless in your own skin. And I know what it feels like to finally be free.

To Every Woman Fighting for Answers: Keep Going

If you’re struggling with PCOS, if doctors aren’t listening, if you feel like you’re screaming into the void—I hear you.

You deserve to be taken seriously. You deserve real answers, real care, and real solutions.

And if unwanted hair growth is one of the things stealing your confidence, know this: You don’t have to live with it forever. There are options. There is hope.
